Actor Ranbir Kapoor said he dislikes the term ‘Bollywood’ and prefers to be seen as a representative of Indian cinema, as told to Variety India.

Ranbir Kapoor, one of Bollywood's leading actors, told Variety India that he is uncomfortable with the label ‘Bollywood’. He explained that the term reduces the diversity of Indian filmmaking to a single, commercial stereotype. Kapoor said he would rather be identified as a representative of Indian cinema as a whole, reflecting its varied languages, styles, and narratives.

The actor emphasized that Indian cinema encompasses regional industries and artistic expressions beyond the Hindi‑language mainstream. By distancing himself from the ‘Bollywood’ tag, he hopes to encourage a broader appreciation of the country's film heritage.

Kapoor's remarks come amid ongoing debates within the industry about branding, global perception, and the need to showcase the full spectrum of Indian film talent.
