Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a new Brahmaputra bridge in Assam, which also hosts the region’s first highway emergency landing strip for aircraft.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a newly constructed bridge spanning the Brahmaputra River in Assam on Wednesday. The structure, designed to improve road connectivity across the state, is expected to reduce travel time between key districts and boost trade in the Northeast.

Alongside the bridge, the ceremony marked the launch of the region’s first highway emergency landing facility, a short runway built adjacent to the bridge to accommodate aircraft in distress. Officials said the facility will enhance safety for both civilian and defense flights operating over the challenging terrain of the Northeast.

Union and state officials highlighted that the dual project reflects the government’s focus on integrating infrastructure development with strategic preparedness. The bridge and landing strip are part of a broader push to upgrade transport networks and improve emergency response capabilities in remote areas.

Construction of the bridge, which began three years ago, involved collaboration between central ministries, the Assam government, and private contractors. The project is slated to handle heavy vehicular traffic, including freight trucks, once fully operational.

The inauguration was attended by senior ministers, local leaders, and representatives from the Indian Air Force, who demonstrated the operational readiness of the emergency landing facility.
