Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a new hydrogen-powered train during his tour of Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab, marking a step toward greener rail transport in India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the northern states of Haryana, Chandigarh and Punjab in a multi-city tour that highlighted India’s commitment to sustainable transport. During the visit, he formally launched a prototype hydrogen-powered train, a first for the country’s rail network.

The train, powered by hydrogen fuel cells, is designed to emit only water vapor, offering a cleaner alternative to diesel locomotives. Officials said the project will be a pilot for future electrification of rail corridors that lack grid connectivity.

The initiative aligns with India’s National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap, which aims to boost hydrogen production and use across key sectors. Indian Railways officials noted that the technology could reduce the sector’s carbon footprint significantly.

The launch was attended by senior railway and energy ministry officials, who praised the move as a milestone in the country’s green energy journey. They also highlighted plans for scaling the technology across major routes.

In the coming months, the government intends to conduct further trials and work with private partners to develop the necessary infrastructure for hydrogen refueling stations along rail lines.
