The Food Commission has launched a focused drive to improve last‑mile food delivery in the frontier districts of Northeast India, aiming to ensure that no household is left without essential supplies.

The Food Commission announced a new initiative targeting the most remote districts of India's Northeast, with the explicit goal of strengthening last‑mile food distribution networks. Officials said the programme seeks to bridge gaps that have left some households without regular access to essential food items.

Frontier districts in the region face logistical hurdles such as rugged terrain, limited road connectivity and seasonal disruptions, which often impede the timely flow of supplies. By concentrating on the final leg of the supply chain, the commission hopes to mitigate these challenges and reduce the risk of food insecurity among vulnerable families.

The rollout will involve coordination with state governments, local panchayats and community groups to set up distribution points, improve cold‑chain facilities and deploy mobile delivery units where needed. Real‑time monitoring tools are also being introduced to track deliveries and address bottlenecks promptly.

Commission representatives indicated that the scheme will be phased over the next six months, beginning with pilot projects in selected districts before scaling up based on performance data. The ultimate aim is to create a sustainable model that guarantees every household, regardless of location, receives regular food supplies.

If successful, the initiative could serve as a template for similar last‑mile interventions across other underserved regions of the country, reinforcing the government's broader commitment to food security and inclusive development.
