In 2026, many women observing Karva Chauth in India broke their fast after spotting the moon on their mobile screens, sparking widespread discussion.
In 2026, a wave of women across India announced that they had broken their Karva Chauth fast after seeing the moon on their mobile phones. The tradition of Karva Chauth, a fasting ritual observed by married women for the well‑being of their husbands, requires the woman to break her fast only after the moon is sighted in the sky.
The sightings were reported from several cities, with women using smartphones to verify the lunar phase. Social media posts showed women holding their phones up to the sky, confirming the presence of the moon before ending the fast.
The incident has drawn attention from religious leaders and social media commentators. Some have praised the use of technology for convenience, while others have expressed concern that the ritual may lose its traditional significance.
The event highlights the evolving intersection of faith and technology in contemporary India, raising questions about how age‑old customs adapt to modern tools.
