The Tamil Nadu government has issued a new rule waiving bus fares for persons with disabilities and their accompanying assistants, aiming to improve mobility for the differently‑abled.

The state government of Tamil Nadu has introduced a fresh transport policy that exempts persons with disabilities from paying bus fares. Under the same provision, any assistant accompanying a disabled passenger will also travel without charge. The move is intended to remove financial barriers and encourage greater use of public transport among the differently‑abled community.

The notification, released by the Department of Transport, applies to all state‑run and private buses operating within Tamil Nadu. Officials say the measure aligns with broader efforts to make public services more inclusive and accessible.

Transport authorities will implement the rule by allowing disabled passengers to present a valid disability certificate, while assistants can travel free when accompanying them. No additional documentation is required for the assistants beyond the passenger's certificate.

The government expects the policy to increase ridership among persons with disabilities and reduce reliance on private vehicles, thereby contributing to smoother traffic flow and lower emissions.

Stakeholders, including disability rights groups, have welcomed the decision, calling it a significant step toward equitable mobility in the state.
