The Supreme Court has cleared the use of certified green firecrackers in Delhi on the eve and day of Diwali, restricting their burst to 6‑7 am and 8‑10 pm.
The Supreme Court of India has issued an order allowing the sale and use of certified green firecrackers in Delhi for the upcoming Diwali celebrations. The decision comes after environmental groups and municipal authorities pressed the court to curb the pollution caused by conventional fireworks.
The court’s directive confines the bursting of these eco‑friendly crackers to two narrow windows: from 6:00 am to 7:00 am and again from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm on the night before Diwali and on Diwali day itself. Outside these periods, the use of any firecrackers is prohibited.
Authorities are tasked with ensuring that only crackers bearing the government‑approved green label are sold, and that vendors display the certification prominently. Violations may attract penalties under existing noise and air‑pollution regulations.
Environmental experts have welcomed the move, noting that green crackers emit significantly lower levels of particulate matter and sulfur compounds. However, they caution that strict monitoring will be essential to achieve the intended health benefits for Delhi’s residents.
