Indian Film Industry Falls Short of Hollywood’s 100‑Day Advance Booking Model

Indian cinemas are unable to replicate Hollywood’s 100‑day advance ticket booking system, a gap highlighted by Livemint’s recent analysis.

Livemint’s latest report points out a key difference between Hollywood and Indian film distribution: the former routinely opens ticket sales 100 days before a movie’s release, while Indian theatres typically begin selling tickets only weeks in advance.

The extended lead time in Hollywood allows studios to gauge audience interest, adjust marketing strategies and secure higher box‑office returns. In contrast, Indian producers often rely on last‑minute hype and limited pre‑sales, which can constrain revenue potential.

Industry experts suggest that the lack of a robust 100‑day booking framework in India is partly due to fragmented distribution channels and a smaller number of multiplexes capable of handling long‑term ticket sales.

The report calls for a reevaluation of ticketing practices in India, urging stakeholders to explore models that could offer audiences earlier access while boosting the financial viability of film releases.

Adopting a longer pre‑sale window could also help Indian films compete on a global scale, aligning domestic practices with international standards.
