Former Indian hockey captain MM Somaya said his 1980 Moscow Olympic gold medal and three other international medals were taken during a burglary at his Bengaluru home.

Former Indian hockey captain MM Somaya reported that his gold medal from the 1980 Moscow Olympics was stolen during a burglary at his residence in Bengaluru. The incident, which took place in the capital of Karnataka, also saw three additional international medals from his playing career go missing.

Police have registered a theft case and are conducting investigations to trace the stolen memorabilia. Somaya, who captained the Indian team to its historic gold in Moscow, expressed deep disappointment over the loss of items that hold national significance.

He appealed to law‑enforcement agencies to expedite the recovery of the medals and warned that such thefts underscore the need for better security of valuable sports artifacts kept in private homes.

The case adds to a growing list of high‑profile burglaries involving sports trophies and medals across the country, prompting calls for stricter safeguards for athletes' personal collections.
