Delhi experts have warned that local emissions are the main culprit behind the city’s worsening air quality, calling for stricter enforcement of pollution controls.

Delhi's air quality remains a critical issue, with recent measurements showing PM2.5 levels exceeding WHO limits. Experts from the Indian Institute of Technology and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee highlighted that local sources such as vehicular exhaust, construction dust, and industrial emissions are driving the spike.

In a briefing held at the Delhi Municipal Corporation, scientists emphasized that even though national policies exist, enforcement at the city level is lax. They urged the municipal administration to tighten monitoring, enforce emission standards, and accelerate the rollout of electric vehicles.

The debate comes as Delhi's Chief Minister announced a new action plan to reduce particulate matter by 30% over the next three years. The plan includes stricter traffic restrictions, increased green cover, and incentives for clean cooking stoves.

Environmental groups have welcomed the experts’ findings but warned that without immediate action, the city could see a rise in respiratory illnesses among its residents. They called for a coordinated effort between government bodies and the private sector to curb local pollution sources.
