After Hardeep Singh was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Puri, Congress leaders Hemant Katara and Atif Akil announced plans to contest the result in court.
Hardeep Singh secured an unopposed seat in the Rajya Sabha representing Puri, concluding the electoral process without any rival candidates. The outcome was formally recorded by the Election Commission, confirming his entry into the upper house.
The Congress party, however, has raised concerns over the transparency of the election procedure. Party representatives argue that the lack of competition may have bypassed standard democratic safeguards.
Two Congress legislators, Hemant Katara and Atif Akil, have publicly stated their intention to challenge the unopposed election in a court of law. They contend that procedural irregularities, if any, must be examined by the judiciary.
The prospective legal challenge could set a precedent for future Rajya Sabha elections, prompting stricter scrutiny of unopposed nominations and reinforcing the role of opposition parties in upholding electoral integrity.
