The Central Bureau of Investigation has assumed control of the case concerning a Tripura rifleman who vanished from a train in 2012, superseding earlier state inquiries.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced today that it will take over the investigation into the disappearance of a rifleman from Tripura who went missing from a train in 2012. The move replaces the earlier probe conducted by the Tripura police, which had failed to locate the serviceman or determine the circumstances of his vanishing.

According to official statements, the CBI will re‑examine all existing evidence, interview witnesses anew and explore any links to criminal or extremist networks. The agency has not disclosed the identity of the rifleman, citing security considerations, but confirmed that he was on active duty with the Indian Army at the time of the incident.

The case, which has lingered for more than a decade, resurfaced after relatives of the missing soldier petitioned the Supreme Court for a fresh inquiry. The CBI’s involvement is expected to bring additional resources and forensic expertise to a file that has long remained unresolved.

Authorities have not provided a timeline for the investigation, but they assured the public that regular updates will be issued as new findings emerge.
