Prasann Sharma, an 11th‑grade student from a government school in Bhopal, won third place at an international sparrow‑conservation conference in Sri Lanka after two years of research.
Prasann Sharma, a student of class 11 at a government school in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, emerged as a global finalist when his sparrow‑conservation model secured third place at an international conference held in Sri Lanka. The competition attracted participants from several countries and focused on innovative approaches to protect urban sparrow populations.
Over the past two years, Sharma conducted field observations, data collection, and community‑engagement activities across his neighbourhood to develop a low‑cost, replicable model for safeguarding sparrows. His project combined habitat‑creation measures such as nesting boxes, planting native seed‑bearing shrubs, and public awareness campaigns in local schools.
The Sri Lankan conference, organized by the International Ornithological Society, recognized Sharma’s work for its practicality and scalability. The award ceremony also honored his class teacher, who guided the research and helped secure funding for the project’s materials.
Officials from the Madhya Pradesh education department praised the achievement, noting that it highlights the potential of student‑led environmental initiatives. Sharma plans to expand the model to other districts in the state, aiming to reverse the declining sparrow numbers observed in many Indian cities.
