Varun Kumar, the caretaker who fled after the murder of retired IAS officer Rakesh Agrawal, was apprehended by police in Agra on Monday, having attempted to escape custody by shooting himself in the leg.

On 15 March 2024, retired IAS officer Rakesh Agrawal was found dead in Bhopal, sparking a high‑profile investigation. Nearly a month later, on 20 April 2024, police in Agra arrested Varun Kumar, the caretaker who had fled the scene. During the transfer, Kumar fired a bullet at his own leg in an attempt to evade arrest. He is now in custody and the case remains under investigation.

The arrest marks a significant development in the murder probe, as authorities seek to piece together the motive and chain of events that led to the officer’s death. Police officials confirmed that Kumar was apprehended after a brief chase and that he sustained a leg injury from his own firearm. The incident underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in securing suspects during high‑stakes investigations.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to establish a timeline of the caretaker’s movements. The case has attracted considerable media attention, given the prominence of the victim and the unusual escape attempt by the suspect.
