The Supreme Court denied an emergency appeal by the Trump administration seeking to invalidate roughly 20,000 California ballots over alleged citizenship issues, ahead of the U.S. midterm elections.
Washington – In a decisive ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court turned down an emergency petition filed by the Trump administration that aimed to set aside about 20,000 ballots cast in California. The petition argued that the votes were cast by individuals whose citizenship status was in question, and sought to exclude them from the upcoming midterm elections.
California election officials responded that the federal claim lacked credible evidence and warned that the move would disenfranchise legitimate voters. They emphasized that the state's voter registration system already verifies citizenship and that the alleged irregularities were unsubstantiated.
The high court’s denial adds to a series of setbacks for the administration’s attempts to intervene in state election processes. Earlier challenges to California’s voting procedures have been dismissed by lower courts, and the Supreme Court’s latest order reinforces the judiciary’s reluctance to alter election outcomes on speculative grounds.
