The state government’s prohibition on drilling new borewells is raising concerns among builders and laborers, who fear loss of work and income.

The Telangana government has issued an order banning the drilling of new borewells across the state. The measure, aimed at curbing the rapid depletion of groundwater, is expected to affect a wide range of sectors that rely on fresh water supplies. Construction firms, which typically use borewells to meet site‑specific water needs, are now facing delays and increased costs as they seek alternative sources.

Industry representatives have warned that the ban could stall ongoing projects and postpone new developments, especially in rapidly urbanising districts. Without access to affordable water, contractors may have to import water tankers or invest in expensive water‑recycling systems, raising overall project budgets.

The restriction also threatens the livelihoods of thousands of workers employed in construction and related trades. Laborers, many of whom depend on daily wages from active sites, risk reduced employment opportunities if projects are postponed or scaled back. The government has indicated that the ban will be reviewed periodically, but officials have not yet outlined any compensation or support mechanisms for affected businesses and workers.
