The Tamil Nadu wildlife department has launched initial steps to protect the Bengal fox and golden jackal, marking the state's first formal effort toward safeguarding these native carnivores.

The wildlife department of Tamil Nadu announced the commencement of a series of preliminary actions aimed at conserving two lesser‑known carnivores – the Bengal fox and the golden jackal. Officials said the move reflects growing recognition of the ecological role these species play in the state’s diverse habitats.

Both the Bengal fox (Vulpes bengalensis) and the golden jackal (Canis aureus) are listed as vulnerable or near‑threatened in parts of their range, facing pressures from habitat loss, road mortality and human‑wildlife conflict. Their populations in Tamil Nadu have been observed to decline, prompting the department to prioritize their protection.

The initial steps include field surveys to map current distribution, identification of critical habitats, and outreach programmes to educate local communities about coexistence. The department also intends to collaborate with research institutions to gather data that will inform more detailed management plans.

While the measures are described as “baby steps,” officials emphasized that they lay the groundwork for stronger legal protection and habitat restoration in the coming years.
