The Supreme Court ruled that no individual or group may occupy a designated protest site indefinitely, hearing petitions linked to police action during the July demonstrations led by the Cockroach Janata Party.

The apex court examined a series of petitions that stemmed from police interventions during the July protests organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). Petitioners argued that the police had overstepped legal boundaries while clearing encampments at a designated protest zone.
In its observations, the bench emphasized that a protest site cannot be held indefinitely by any individual or group, underscoring the need to balance the right to peaceful assembly with public order and land use regulations.
The ruling signals that future protest encampments will be subject to time‑bound permissions, and authorities may act to remove occupants once the stipulated period expires, unless a further judicial order extends the stay.
Legal experts note that the decision could set a precedent for handling similar sit‑in protests across the country, reinforcing the court's role in mediating between civil liberties and administrative enforcement.
The CJP, a relatively new political outfit, has said it will review the judgment and consider legal avenues to protect its right to protest, while the government has welcomed the clarity on the limits of protest occupations.
