A low‑pressure system named ‘Murasu’ is set to bring intense rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning to isolated parts of Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet and Nilgiris districts on Monday, November 2.

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a warning that the cyclonic disturbance ‘Murasu’ will affect northern Tamil Nadu on Monday. Forecasts indicate that isolated pockets in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet and the Nilgiris hills will experience very heavy rain accompanied by strong thunderstorms and frequent lightning strikes.

Meteorologists expect rainfall totals to exceed 50 mm in the most affected areas, with the potential for localized flooding in low‑lying neighborhoods. Residents have been advised to stay indoors during severe thunderstorm periods and to avoid travel on exposed roads.

Authorities in the concerned districts are on standby, with emergency services prepared to respond to any water‑logging or power‑outage incidents. The warning remains in force until the system moves eastward into the Bay of Bengal later on Tuesday.

The department reiterated that the storm is not a cyclonic storm of tropical cyclone intensity, but its associated convective activity can still cause significant disruption, especially in urban corridors of Chennai where drainage systems are already strained.

Officials will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates through local media and official channels as the weather evolves.
