The Special Investigation Team concluded that the rioting, wrongful restraint and trespass charges against Kerala Students Union activists over the black‑flag protest against former Health Minister Veena George lack basis.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has submitted its final report on the case involving Kerala Students Union (KSU) activists who displayed a black flag in protest against former Health Minister Veena George. The report states that the accusations of rioting, wrongful restraint and trespass against the activists cannot be sustained.

The SIT found that, while the demonstration was politically charged, it did not constitute a criminal offence. No evidence was uncovered to show that the activists obstructed police duties or unlawfully restrained the former minister.

As a result, the accused are cleared of any legal liability. Political parties and student bodies have reacted to the findings, noting that a symbolic protest, even if contentious, does not automatically translate into a punishable act under Indian law.

Legal experts say the decision may shape future debates on the boundaries of lawful protest and the application of criminal statutes to political dissent in Kerala.
