A Shiv Sena Member of Legislative Assembly said that people should not attend the funerals of farmers who have committed suicide, a statement that drew criticism and was later clarified by the MLA.
The Shiv Sena MLA, whose name was not disclosed in the initial report, made the remark during a public gathering in Maharashtra, stating that people should not attend the funerals of farmers who have taken their own lives.
The comment was widely condemned by farmer unions, opposition parties and civil society groups, who viewed it as insensitive and dismissive of the plight of farmers.
In a subsequent statement, the MLA clarified that his words were taken out of context and that he had intended to highlight the need for better mental health support for farmers. He also expressed regret for any distress caused by his remarks.
The incident has added to the growing scrutiny of political leaders’ comments on the farmer suicide crisis in the state.
