The Meghalaya government has sanctioned a Rs 9.4‑crore indoor sports complex to be built in Williamnagar, aiming to boost local sports facilities.
The state cabinet has given the green light to a Rs 9.4‑crore project that will see an indoor sports complex erected in Williamnagar, the administrative hub of the East Garo Hills district. The facility is slated to include a multipurpose arena, a gymnasium, and ancillary amenities designed to host a range of sports and training programmes.
Officials say the complex will address the long‑standing shortage of modern indoor venues in the region, providing athletes and school teams with a year‑round space for practice and competition. The project is expected to be completed within two years, subject to the usual procurement and construction timelines.
The investment forms part of Meghalaya’s broader strategy to enhance sports infrastructure across the state, encouraging greater participation at the grassroots level and potentially attracting state‑level tournaments. State representatives have highlighted that the complex will also generate temporary construction jobs and, later, permanent staffing opportunities for coaches and facility managers.
Funding for the venture will come from the state’s sports development budget, supplemented by central government schemes aimed at promoting sports in the North‑East. Once operational, the complex is anticipated to serve as a hub for youth development and community events in Williamnagar and surrounding areas.
