Rajasthan Farmers Face Delayed Rabi Sowing as Heat and Dryness Persist

High temperatures and a persistent rainfall deficit have pushed back the start of the rabi sowing season in Rajasthan, according to state agriculture officials.

Rajasthan farmers have postponed the beginning of the rabi sowing season as a severe rainfall deficit and soaring temperatures have made the soil unsuitable for planting.

The state’s agriculture department reports that the sowing window, which usually opens in early October, has been pushed back by several days.

The lack of adequate monsoon rains has left fields dry and the high temperatures have increased evaporation rates, making it difficult for seeds to germinate. Officials say that the current weather pattern is a significant deviation from the average for this period.

Farmers fear that the delay could compress the growing period and reduce yields, especially for wheat and mustard, the main rabi crops in the region. Many have already started to plan for alternate sowing dates and are seeking support from the state government.

In response, the Rajasthan government has announced a boost in irrigation support and is coordinating with the Central Ministry to provide subsidies for water pumps and seed varieties that can tolerate higher temperatures.
