The Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has formally demanded that the state assembly be dissolved and fresh elections be held, citing a deteriorating law‑and‑order situation and the government’s alleged denial of anti‑drug initiatives.

Punjab’s state leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party submitted a formal request to the central government for the premature dissolution of the state assembly. The party argues that the current administration has failed to maintain public order, pointing to a rise in criminal incidents and communal tensions across the state.

In addition, the BJP highlighted what it described as the state government's refusal to support or acknowledge ongoing anti‑drug campaigns. Party officials claim that the alleged inaction has allowed drug trafficking networks to expand, exacerbating the social and health challenges faced by youth.

The demand for early polls comes ahead of the scheduled 2027 assembly elections and reflects the BJP’s strategy to capitalize on perceived governance lapses. State officials have not yet responded to the request, and the Election Commission’s stance remains to be seen.

Political analysts note that the call for early elections could intensify the already competitive electoral landscape in Punjab, where issues of law‑and‑order and drug abuse have become central to voter concerns.

The BJP has indicated that it will organize rallies and public meetings across major districts to garner support for its demand, urging the central government to act swiftly.
