Old Footage Misrepresented as Ramlila Maidan Rally Turnout, Fact-Check Finds

The Quint’s fact‑check team examined a video that was widely shared on social media platforms with the caption suggesting it depicted the size of the crowd at a recent rally held at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. By analysing visual cues, timestamps embedded in the file and cross‑referencing with earlier recordings, the investigators concluded that the clip dates back several years and was originally recorded at a different gathering.

The original footage shows landmarks and signage that do not match the layout of Ramlila Maidan during the recent rally, and the weather conditions visible in the video differ from those reported on the day of the event. Moreover, metadata extracted from the video file indicates a creation date well before the rally took place.

The mis‑labelled video was circulated with the intent of inflating the perceived turnout, a tactic commonly seen in political misinformation. The Quint’s report urges users to verify the source of such content before sharing, highlighting the role of digital literacy in curbing the spread of false narratives.

No official statements from rally organizers or authorities were available at the time of publication, and the fact‑check does not comment on the actual attendance figures for the Ramlila Maidan rally.
