Chief Minister Conrad Sangma opened a new road, a bridge and a school in Williamnagar as East Garo Hills district celebrated its golden jubilee.
On the occasion of East Garo Hills district's 50th anniversary, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma presided over the inauguration of three key infrastructure projects in Williamnagar, the district headquarters. The initiatives comprise a 5‑kilometre all‑weather road linking Williamnagar with surrounding villages, a concrete bridge over the Simsang River to improve monsoon‑season connectivity, and a government primary school equipped with modern classrooms. Officials said the projects form part of the state’s broader push to enhance connectivity and educational facilities in the remote northeastern region, noting that they will boost trade, cut travel time and provide better learning opportunities for local children. The ceremony was attended by district officials, local leaders and residents who gathered to celebrate the golden jubilee of East Garo Hills, a district carved out of West Garo Hills in 1976. The state government has indicated that similar infrastructure schemes will be rolled out across Meghalaya to address longstanding rural development gaps.
