The active Mayon Volcano erupted, sending ash plumes up to three kilometres high, prompting evacuation of more than 12,000 residents from its lower slopes.
Mayon Volcano, one of the Philippines' most active stratovolcanoes, erupted today, producing a dense ash column that rose approximately three kilometres into the atmosphere. Video footage captured the plume expanding over the surrounding countryside, reducing visibility and prompting immediate alerts from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
In June 2023, PHIVOLCS ordered the evacuation of more than 12,000 people living on the volcano's lower slopes to designated shelters, a precautionary measure aimed at protecting communities from ashfall and toxic gases. The same evacuation protocol was re‑activated as the recent eruption intensified, with authorities directing residents to move to safer locations.
No injuries or fatalities have been reported so far. Local officials continue to monitor the situation closely, advising residents to wear masks, avoid outdoor activities, and stay tuned to official updates as the volcano remains under alert level five.
