KMCRI in Hubbali, Karnataka, is treating 120 stroke cases monthly using a hub-and-spoke model, reducing the need for emergency transfers to Bengaluru.

Specialized stroke care is becoming more accessible in northern Karnataka as KMCRI in Hubbali adopts a hub-and-spoke model for neurological emergencies. This approach aims to bring advanced medical treatment closer to patients, significantly reducing the time and risk associated with emergency transfers to Bengaluru.

Data from NIMHANS neurology casualty indicates that stroke accounts for 40% of patient admissions, highlighting the critical need for localized treatment centers. In response, KMCRI in Hubbali is currently managing approximately 120 stroke cases every month, serving as a vital regional hub for acute neurological care.

The implementation of this model addresses the geographical gap in specialized healthcare, ensuring that patients in northern Karnataka receive timely intervention. By decentralizing high-level stroke care, the system reduces the burden on tertiary hospitals in the capital city while improving patient outcomes through faster response times.

This development coincides with the global observance of World Stroke Day on October 29, underscoring the importance of awareness and accessible infrastructure in managing one of the leading causes of disability.
