India’s space agency successfully launched NVS‑03, the third satellite in the second‑generation NVS series, to enhance the NavIC navigation system.
On 30 October 2023, ISRO launched the NVS‑03 satellite from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre using a PSLV vehicle. The launch added the third member of the second‑generation Navigation with Indian Constellation (NVS) series to India’s satellite fleet.
NVS‑03 is designed to augment the existing NavIC navigation system by providing additional signals and improved positioning accuracy. The satellite will operate in a geostationary orbit, complementing the constellation of NavIC satellites in medium Earth orbit.
The deployment of NVS‑03 marks a significant step toward enhancing India’s autonomous navigation capabilities. ISRO plans to integrate the new satellite’s data with NavIC’s ground segment for real‑time updates and expanded coverage.
ISRO officials said the satellite will undergo a series of in‑orbit tests before becoming fully operational. The successful launch is expected to strengthen India’s position in the global satellite navigation arena.
