India's Purchasing Managers' Index for manufacturing fell to 56.0 in October, indicating a slowdown, while export orders rose, reflecting stronger demand abroad.
India's manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) slipped to 56.0 in October from 57.0 in September, signalling a deceleration in factory activity while still remaining in expansion territory.
The HSBC/IHS Markit survey revealed that domestic orders fell 3.4% year‑on‑year, whereas export orders jumped 5.3%, underscoring robust overseas demand.
The slowdown is attributed to a mix of supply‑chain constraints and softer domestic consumption, but the rise in export orders suggests that Indian manufacturers are still benefiting from global demand for goods such as electronics, textiles and machinery.
Analysts note that while the PMI remains above the 50‑point threshold that separates growth from contraction, the narrowing gap indicates that the manufacturing sector may need to address capacity and logistics bottlenecks to sustain momentum.
The data will be closely watched by policymakers and investors as India seeks to boost its manufacturing output and improve its balance of trade.
