India has officially launched the 2027 Census, marking the first time the country will conduct its largest population count entirely through digital means. The nationwide enumeration will rely on electronic devices and online platforms to gather data from every household.

India has commenced the 2027 Census, the country’s most extensive population survey, with a historic shift to a fully digital methodology. The Census of India, traditionally carried out every ten years, will now rely on smartphones, tablets and online portals to collect demographic data.

Enumerators across the nation have been equipped with secure devices and trained to enter information directly into a central database. The digital approach is expected to reduce manual errors, speed up data processing and enable real‑time monitoring of coverage.

Officials anticipate that the new system will improve accuracy in key indicators such as literacy, employment and housing conditions, and will provide policymakers with up‑to‑date insights for resource allocation.

The Census Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner has outlined a 12‑month collection period, beginning on 1 January 2027, with preliminary results expected by the end of 2028.
