The Indian Institute of Science has created a 3D‑printed tumour model that mimics the physical and chemical properties of real tumours, allowing researchers to observe how chemotherapy drugs infiltrate cancerous tissue.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru has unveiled a novel 3D‑printed tumour model designed to replicate the complex microenvironment of solid cancers.
Using advanced bioprinting techniques, the model incorporates patient‑derived tumour cells, stromal components and a vascular network, creating a realistic platform for drug testing.
Preliminary trials with standard chemotherapeutics showed that the model could reveal how drugs penetrate and diffuse through tumour tissue, offering insights that are difficult to obtain in conventional cell cultures or animal studies.
Researchers plan to use the platform to screen new drug candidates and to tailor treatment regimens, potentially accelerating the development of more effective cancer therapies.
