The Air Quality Management Commission has issued notices to the District Collector and Superintendent of Police in Gurdaspur after recording 100 stubble burning incidents, a significant rise from 53 in the same period last year.
The Air Quality Management Commission (AQMC) has taken administrative action against officials in Gurdaspur district, Punjab, following a sharp increase in crop residue burning incidents. The commission has issued formal notices to the District Collector (DC) and the Superintendent of Police (SP) regarding the failure to curb these violations.
According to data released by the commission, 100 instances of stubble burning were recorded in Gurdaspur between September 15 and November 2, 2026. This figure marks a significant escalation in environmental violations compared to the previous year.
In the same period last year, only 53 such incidents were documented in the district. The doubling of cases has prompted the AQMC to hold the local administration and law enforcement agencies accountable for the deterioration in air quality management.
The notices serve as a directive for the DC and SP to take immediate corrective measures to prevent further burning of agricultural waste, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations in the region.
