Former CM Palaniswami and Dhinakaran demand reversal of Tamil Nadu dairy by‑product price hike

Former Chief Minister Palaniswami and senior leader Dhinakaran have urged the Tamil Nadu government to scrap the recent increase in prices of dairy by‑products, calling the move detrimental to farmers and consumers.

Former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, alongside senior AIADMK figure T.T.V. Dhinakaran, addressed a press conference in Chennai, demanding that the state government withdraw the newly announced hike in prices of dairy by‑products such as whey and skim milk powder. The leaders argued that the increase would raise costs for small‑scale dairy farmers and ultimately burden consumers with higher milk‑derived product prices.

The Tamil Nadu government had earlier justified the hike as a measure to align with rising input costs and to improve the profitability of dairy cooperatives. However, Palaniswami described the policy as resembling a "corporate villain" often portrayed in films, suggesting it favors large commercial interests over the agrarian community.

Both politicians called for an immediate review of the pricing decision, urging the Department of Animal Husbandry to consider a more balanced approach that protects farmer margins while keeping end‑product prices affordable. They also appealed to the state’s finance ministry to explore subsidies or alternative support mechanisms.

The demand comes amid growing concerns across the state about inflationary pressures on essential food items. While the government has not yet responded publicly, officials are expected to meet the leaders in the coming days to discuss possible adjustments.

Stakeholders, including dairy cooperatives and consumer groups, are watching the developments closely, as any reversal could set a precedent for future agricultural pricing policies in Tamil Nadu.
