An elderly resident of Lakocha village in Madhya Pradesh accidentally ingested a toxic pesticide, mistaking it for cough medicine. He was rushed to Rewa district hospital after developing severe symptoms.

A 68‑year‑old man from Lakocha village in Madhya Pradesh mistakenly drank a pesticide that was stored in his house, believing it to be a cough remedy. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday when the elderly man opened a bottle marked for agricultural use and consumed its contents. Within an hour, he began to feel dizzy and started frothing at the mouth, prompting his family to call emergency services.

Paramedics arrived and noted that the patient was in a critical state, with signs of severe poisoning. He was immediately transported to the district hospital in Rewa, where doctors administered antidotes and supportive care. Despite intensive treatment, his condition remained unstable, and the medical team decided to refer him to a higher‑level facility for further management.

The Rewa hospital confirmed that the patient was admitted under the care of the toxicology unit. While the exact type of pesticide was not disclosed, authorities are investigating the source and storage practices that led to the accidental ingestion. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of storing hazardous chemicals in households, especially in rural areas where such substances are commonly kept near living spaces.

Health officials are urging residents to keep all pesticides and chemicals in locked containers and to clearly label them. They also recommend that families educate older members about the risks of accidental ingestion and ensure that medicine cabinets are separate from agricultural supplies.
