A series of deadly fires, from the Mangolpuri shoe factory blaze to the Uphaar cinema inferno, have repeatedly put Delhi under the spotlight for safety lapses.

Major fire incidents have repeatedly shaken Delhi, most notably the blaze that engulfed a shoe‑manufacturing unit in Mangolpuri and the later inferno at the Uphaar cinema complex. Both events resulted in significant loss of life and highlighted glaring gaps in fire‑safety compliance across the capital.

Investigations by the Delhi Fire Service and other authorities have pointed to inadequate emergency exits, faulty wiring and insufficient fire‑extinguishing equipment as contributing factors. The findings have prompted calls for stricter enforcement of existing safety regulations and a comprehensive audit of high‑risk premises.

City officials have pledged to accelerate inspections and impose heavier penalties on establishments that fail to meet fire‑code standards. Civil society groups, meanwhile, are urging the government to adopt a more proactive approach to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
