The Delhi High Court has directed the Wrestling Federation of India to decide on the show‑cause notices issued to wrestler Vinesh Phogat within 14 days, emphasizing the need for athletes to be mentally fit for competition.
The Delhi High Court issued an order on Wednesday requiring the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to resolve the show‑cause notices served to Olympic‑medalist wrestler Vinesh Phogat within a fortnight. The court stressed that an athlete must be in a fit and relaxed state of mind to take part in any competitive event, and any delay in adjudicating the notices could affect her preparation.
The show‑cause notices, which question Phogat's conduct and eligibility, were sent earlier this month following internal disputes within the federation. By setting a two‑week deadline, the bench aims to ensure a swift and transparent decision, preventing prolonged uncertainty for the athlete.
The HC's directive also instructs the WFI to communicate its final decision in writing to both Phogat and the court, thereby creating a clear record of the outcome. No further comments were made by the federation or the athlete's representatives at the time of the ruling.
Legal experts note that the order underscores the judiciary's role in safeguarding athletes' mental well‑being and ensuring sports bodies adhere to due process. The decision comes as India prepares for upcoming international wrestling events where Phogat is expected to represent the country.
