Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party staged a protest in Ludhiana, urging the Congress party to take responsibility for the 1984 anti‑Sikh violence.
On Thursday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists gathered in Ludhiana, Punjab, to stage a demonstration aimed at holding the Indian National Congress accountable for the 1984 anti‑Sikh violence. The protest featured placards and slogans referencing the massacre of thousands of Sikhs following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Organisers said the rally was intended to remind the Congress of its historical role in the events of 1984 and to press for official acknowledgment and redressal. Participants marched through key city streets, chanting party slogans and calling for justice for the victims and their families.
Local police reported that the demonstration remained peaceful, with no incidents of violence or arrests. The BJP has previously used anniversaries of the 1984 killings to highlight what it describes as the Congress's failure to fully address the tragedy.
The protest comes ahead of upcoming political gatherings in the state, where both parties are expected to vie for support among the Sikh community. Analysts note that the issue continues to influence electoral dynamics in Punjab.
