The Director General of Assam Rifles visited Manipur to assess ongoing security measures and the progress of fence work on the India-Myanmar frontier.
New Delhi – The Director General of the Assam Rifles, the oldest paramilitary force in India, conducted a field review in Manipur to evaluate the current state of security along the 1,643‑kilometre India‑Myanmar border. During the visit, the DG inspected the newly initiated fencing projects aimed at curbing illegal crossings, smuggling and insurgent infiltration.
Officials accompanying the DG highlighted that the fence work, which began earlier this year, is progressing in phases, with priority given to vulnerable sectors in the Churachandpur and Tamenglong districts. Satellite imagery and ground reports indicate that several kilometres of barbed wire and reinforced concrete barriers have already been installed.
The DG emphasized the importance of integrating border infrastructure with intelligence‑driven patrols to maintain a robust deterrent posture. He also met local administrators and community leaders to address concerns about displacement and livelihood impacts, assuring that compensation and rehabilitation measures are being implemented.
The review comes amid heightened security alerts in the northeast, as authorities seek to strengthen frontier defenses while balancing developmental needs of border‑area populations.
