Assam authorities have launched a crackdown on child marriage, resulting in the arrest of 524 individuals and the registration of 441 cases.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the figures during a press conference, highlighting the government's commitment to combating child marriage. The arrests and cases stem from a statewide operation launched to enforce the newly amended Child Marriage Restraint Act. The Act, which came into effect in November 2022, raises the legal age of marriage for women from 18 to 21, aligning it with the age for men.
