The Assam state cabinet has signed an agreement to develop five ropeway projects across the state, with two slated for Guwahati.
The Assam cabinet met on Thursday and gave its nod to a pact that will see five new ropeway lines constructed across the state. The decision, announced by the chief minister’s office, aims to boost tourism and improve urban mobility in hilly and congested areas.
Two of the approved ropeways will be located in Guwahati, targeting the city’s rapidly growing commuter traffic and linking key tourist spots on the outskirts. Officials said the Guwahati projects will cut travel time significantly and provide an eco‑friendly alternative to road transport.
Funding for the ventures will come from a mix of state allocations and private partnership models, with the projects expected to commence within the next six months. The selected contractors will be required to adhere to safety and environmental standards set by the state.
The move aligns with Assam’s broader infrastructure push, which includes upgrades to roads, railways and river transport, aiming to position the state as a premier destination for both domestic and international visitors.
